Charles T. Tart
Chair of Consciousness Studies
ITP has established and is now seeking funds to endow the Charles T. Tart Chair of Consciousness Studies. The Chair is named in honor of Charles T. Tart, an internationally known scientist who, over the past four decades, has made numerous seminal contributions to transpersonal psychology, parapsychology, the study of consciousness and altered states of consciousness, while personally embodying transpersonal values in his own life. These values have been expressed and transmitted in his extensive teaching, writing and lecturing.
The primary purpose of the Charles T. Tart Chair of Consciousness Studies is to facilitate Professor Tart's pioneering work building bridges between transpersonal psychology and mainstream science, as well as to expand our knowledge of the transpersonal/spiritual. This will include Tart's personal research and writing, and will also allow various other distinguished Institute faculty members and visiting scholars to carry out relevant research projects consistent with the aims of the Chair.
The work carried out under the auspices of the Chair will:
- Strengthen, refine and advance transpersonal psychology through appropriate use of mainstream knowledge and methodology
- Open mainstream science and the vast number of people it influences to the reality and importance of the spiritual, transcendent dimensions of human life by demonstrating, with the best of scientific and psychological methodology, the reality, importance, and benefits of transpersonal/spiritual dimensions of experience.
The long-term results of this work will be the development of an effective spirituality for our time, as well as a happier and more meaningful life experience for people around the world who experience spiritual aridity in their lives.
