Low-Residency M.A. in Counseling Psychology (LRMACP)

To serve students at a distance, ITP is now offering an Online Master’s in Counseling Psychology program available to working professionals, active parents, and others who are unable to relocate or commute to Palo Alto, CA. This is a low-residency program flexible enough to meet the needs of adult learners who are balancing many responsibilities while furthering their education. With a unique online environment specifically designed to deliver ITP's whole-person education, you will receive superb training, build close relationships with other students and faculty, and participate in a supportive online academic community.

The Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology, designed for students who desire a professional career in counseling and psychotherapy, fulfills the academic requirements for graduates to qualify for state licensure as Marriage and Family Therapists or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors. The curriculum combines foundational coursework in transpersonal psychology with specialized courses in counseling theory and skills development, including a year-long supervised practicum experience.

The 93-unit curriculum consists of 61 units offered in an online instructional format and 32 units of hands-on clinical training, offered during two 8- or 9-day residential intensives per year. Flexible scheduling allows students to complete the program in three or four years. Some states may require additional coursework to meet their specific licensure requirements.

In the context of a community process, emphasis is placed on personal integration of the course material, giving students the opportunity for inner transformational work. With the online classroom and the on-campus intensives as a laboratory, students use their own life experience as the basis for case study. They learn to critique and assess psychological theory, develop strong interpersonal skills, hone their therapeutic skills, and apply what they are learning to their own life’s work. After building their foundation in both transpersonal and counseling psychology, students apply their skills through supervised practicum work in varied clinical and institutional settings that are local to the student.

Students may optionally include the Creative Expression specialization, which is an advanced series of courses offered to doctoral and masters students who wish to explore the creative process as an avenue to healing and the therapeutic approach, learning, research, professional practice and application. This specialization is one in which students complete course- work and practicum work that involves them in a multi-disciplinary study of movement, story-telling, writing, symbology, drama, and fine arts. Students are invited to explore a variety of creative avenues in their own work as well as within the required courses.
