Research at the Institute
ITP faculty engage in scholarly research, most often in association with graduate students. Our research community, oriented toward the pursuit and expansion of knowledge, target big questions: How spirituality relates to other areas of human experience, and how understanding of the spiritual aspects of human experience contributes to our knowledge of psychology and other sciences. Our latest focus on clinical studies such as the mechanisms and effectiveness of transpersonal psychotherapy open new and exciting possibilities in the professional training of transpersonal psychologists.
The synthesis of teaching and research is fundamental to the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology. Much of this research takes place within interest groups, at ITP's William James Center, and through the Transpersonal Education and Research specialization in the curriculum. Faculty members at ITP have developed a cluster of novel research approaches, incorporating spirituality into cross-disciplinary research and collaboration. Our research alliances are both nationwide and international.
As different from a pure natural science or psychological research approach, the ITP research program has a strong grounding in human sciences, where state-of-the-art research designs are utilized to achieve greater understanding of exceptional, transcendent, and transformative human experiences.
