Residential Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology

Video: David Lukoff introduces the Spiritual Psy.D. ProgramThe Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology is a spiritually-oriented clinical psychology program designed to provide students with the theoretical foundations, clinical training, and qualitative and quantitative research necessary to sit for licensure as a psychologist in the State of California. We emphasize both in-depth clinical training and serious scholarly research in the field of clinical psychology.

As an integral part of our training, we also provide education in the nature of spirituality and the transformative process in general, as well as helping students develop skills in assessing a client's spiritual development. The spiritual orientation of our program draws upon and supports research in the field that provides evidence that the presence of spirituality and/or religious affiliation promotes better psychological and physical well-being. We include the wisdom of many different religions, as well as shamanism, consciousness studies, and the field of transpersonal psychology as a whole.

In the third year of the program, each student has the opportunity to design a self-directed year of study. Students engage in their own spirital practice and a course of reading, as well as apply chosen spiritually-oriented clinical techniques with clients at their practicum setting. During this year, students work with an individual faculty mentor for oversight and supervision.

ITP’s Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology program educates all students from a transpersonal perspective, which includes and goes beyond more traditional approaches to understanding the human psyche. Transpersonal Psychology extends its reach to include the study of consciousness, spirituality, mind-body wellness (see Aikido and Psychology), and the relationship of the individual to the community. The transpersonal approach emphasizes harmony and the integration of body, mind and spirit, in order to maximize human potential, creativity, and fulfillment. Students not only build a strong foundation of clinical skills but they learn how to communicate in a variety of complex relational circumstances as well.

The Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology typically requires five years to complete, including three years of full-time coursework, one year of dissertation writing, and one year of internship.
