Residential Ph.D. in Transpersonal Psychology Specializations

A classroom at ITPStudents in the Ph.D. in Transpersonal Psychology may choose to focus their studies in one of four particular areas of specialization depending on their professional goals: Creative Expression, Spiritual Guidance, Transformational Life Coaching, or Research and Education.

Creative Expression
The Creative Expression specialization is an advanced series of courses offered to students who wish to explore the creative process as an avenue to healing, learning, research, professional practice and application. This specialization is one in which students complete coursework and practicum work that involves a multi-disciplinary study of movement, storytelling, writing, symbology, drama, music, and fine arts. Students are invited to explore a variety of creative avenues in their own work as well as within the required courses. Contact: arts@itp.edu.

Spiritual Guidance
Spiritual guidance helps us enhance our sense of the spiritual in our everyday lives, and have a deeper relationship with the Divine in all aspects of our lives. It is a process of accompanying people on their spiritual journeys, founded on the understanding that Spirit lives within the hearts of each of us and within all creation.

Through deep listening, thoughtful questioning, and sincere reflection, spiritual guidance provides an opportunity to regularly view our lives from a spiritual perspective. The Spiritual Guidance Specialization teaches from a wide variety of spiritual approaches. Our goal is to educate spiritual guides who can support inner development with people from a wide variety of backgrounds. Contact: spiritual_guidance@itp.edu.

Transpersonal Education and Research
The Transpersonal Education and Research Specialization (TERS) prepares students to become professional educators and researchers in transpersonal psychology and related fields. The program provides special skills in research and education in human science, innovative research in psychology, consciousness studies, spirituality and human development. It emphasizes development of expertise in conducting and guiding interdisciplinary research of the full range of human experience.

Graduates of the program are trained to use transformative approaches to learning and inquiry in academic, public and business settings. The flexibility of the program enables students to focus on chosen areas of interest. TERS skills can be used in academic and non-academic settings, i.e. institutioins, health programs, agencies, etc. Contact: ters@itp.edu.

Transformational Life Coaching (TLC)
The TLC specialization is based on the theoretical principles and practices of ontological (getting to the heart of what it means to be human) coaching. It prepares students to enter into a professional coaching relationship with clients and help them to make the changes they want to see in their lives.  This specialization is designed to provide students with the educational background necessary to apply for coach certification through the International Coach Federation (ICF). The training and theory provided in the program can be applied in a private coaching practice or can enhance work that students are already engaged in.
