Residential Ph.D. in Transpersonal Psychology

Program Overview

ITP's Ph.D. in Transpersonal Psychology is a three-year course of study designed for adult learners with a qualifying master's degree (in Psychology or a related field such as Social Work, Divinity, Social Sciences or Humanities from an accredited school), who seek an intimate educational environment, personal transformation, and preparation for becoming agents for change.

The program's professional objective is to develop open and compassionate graduates with 1) doctoral- level mastery of research methods, critical thinking, and scholarly writing; 2) knowledge that spans intellectual understanding, emotional intelligence, embodied knowing, and spiritual insight; and 3) experience in the application of transpersonal principles and practices in the service of personal, professional, and social transformation.

Program Highlights

World-Class Faculty. Our doctoral faculty are among the leaders in the field of transpersonal psychology. They are fully engaged with students in the classroom, accessible for student consultation, and provide the core for a true learning community.

Original Research. With faculty support and guidance, students are encouraged to research areas that reflect both their interests and passions. The research of ITP's doctoral students has garnered more than 15 APA awards for excellence.

Integrated Studies. ITP's six areas of study—intellectual, physical, spiritual, emotional creativity and community—are integrated into the required coursework. Additionally, the program includes two years of praxis, where the transpersonal is integrated into students' personal and professional lives through self-designed applied le arning opportunities.

Optional Choice of Specializations. Students may further focus their study by specializing in one or more of the following areas of transpersonal psychology: Creative Expression, Transpersonal & Research, Spiritual Guidance, and Transformational Life Coaching.

Program Flexibility. The program is structured to allow flexibility of course load and hours of attendance. Students have the choice of taking only the required classes (10 to 12 units per quarter) and being on campus as little as one evening and one full day per week or registering for as many as 14 units per quarter, enjoying our rich elective course offerings, specializations, and campus services and events.

Fields of Application

The education, personal development, and skills gained in the Residential Ph.D. program can be applied to various fields: the healing professions and health care, higher education, community services, social activism, training and development, and consultative work in both the corporate and public sectors. Our graduates often have composite careers, combining such activities as practice in a variety of healing arts, teaching, research, writing articles and books, leading workshops, private consultation, program development and management and, in general, advancing the field of transpersonal psychology in unique and innovative ways.
