The James Fadiman Dissertation Support Fund
Initiated by:
Individual donors who wish to honor James Fadiman’s contributions to ITP and its students.
Anticipated Source of Funding and Amount:
$2,500 maximum suggested award. Student may apply twice (over two years) for this award. Two awards to the same student are unlikely, but possible.
Purpose of Fund:
Funds are to be used to support Doctoral student research costs in the dissertation phase whose work meets one or more of the following criteria.
Eligibility:
- Pragmatic research with potential practical outcomes
- Studies that create or validate a new way of working, a new way to do therapy, coaching, teaching or training
- Dissertations that break out of the medical model for therapy rather than perpetuate it; or
- Dissertations on altered states of consciousness, especially those involved with entheogens (psychedelics)
The James Fadiman Dissertation Support Fund specifically does NOT support:
- Interview studies of small groups with special distinction
- Theory dissertations
- Any studies in which the writer is a primary object of study
Application/Letter Instructions:
- Complete Application Form (available here in PDF format)
- Submit a letter stating why you feel your dissertation meets the criteria
- Attach a dissertation expense report (how this money would be used)
- Additional information may be requested (for clarification purposes) by the Dissertation Support Fund during the application process
No applicant is to be given preferential information or treatment by members of the Board of Trustees or the staff of ITP. All applicants will receive the same information about this fund and how to fill out the application.
The James Fadiman Dissertation Support Fund Scholarship Application
Application/Letter Deadline:
Applications/letters may be submitted at anytime and awards distributed at any time during the academic year. Submit all documentation to Paula Yue, Dean of Student Services (pyue@itp.edu).
Selection Process:
- Applicant’s research is reviewed by the Dissertation Fund Committee
- The Committees choices are final and their ratings confidential
Disbursement of Awards:
Applicants will be notified in writing of the Fund Committee’s decision no later than 90 days after their application is received.
All awards are in the form of cash awards given directly to the student. No money is to be used for tuition reduction or direct compensation to the student. All monies are to be applied to actual incurred research related expenses that my include travel, room and board in exceptional cases.
Number and Amount of Awards:
The number and amount of awards will be determined each year by the Dissertation Fund Committee, depending on available funding and students who meet the criteria.
Application Files:
Once submitted, application/letter/documentation becomes the property of ITP. The items will be kept on file for two years after submission. After this time they will be destroyed. The documents and the Fund Committee's ratings are confidential and will not be released to anyone, including applicants.
