Palo Alto Professor Receives Parapsychological Association
Award at International Meeting in England
Award honors integration of science and parapsychology
Charles T. Tart, professor at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, received the Charles Honorton Integrative Contributions Award at the Parapsychological Association (PA) international conference in England last weekend. The PA conference was held jointly with the annual meeting of the Society for Psychical Research, at the University of Winchester in Winchester, UK from August 13 through 17.
In his comments during presentation of the award, Roger Nelson, Ph.D., the current President of the PA, said, "It gives me great pleasure to introduce the first recipient of the Parapsychological Association's new 'Integrative Contributions Award,' suggested by Rex Stanford and named for Charles Honorton. There is no question that the intent of this award – to honor the marriage of mainstream scientific accomplishment with major contributions in parapsychology – is met in Charles T. Tart. I can think of no scholar more directly and deeply qualified to cross the bridges between disciplines, as Charley has done in books like Altered States of Consciousness (1969) and Transpersonal Psychologies (1975)."
Dr. Thomas Potterfield, president of ITP remarks, "We are very proud of all the scholarly research Charley has done over the years. He has done more to provide grounded scientific understanding of spiritual phenomena than anyone. His newest book, The End of Materialism: How Evidence of the Paranormal is Bringing Science and Spirit Together, coming out in March of next year, brings together his life's work in parapsychology, consciousness research, and transpersonal psychology -- integrating his many contributions into a scientific and spiritual whole. "
