Huston Smith Recieves Honorary Doctorate
Before a capacity audience at ITP, Huston Smith charmed the crowd with his erudition, warmth, and good humor in a lecture after receiving the institute’s honorary doctorate degree.
With numerous allusions to historical figures he has known, Dr. Smith spoke about the divide between science and spirituality, and he traced the history of psychology from its nascence to the current day. Dr Smith cited ITP’s role in founding and promoting transpersonal psychology, and he was effusive in his praise of the work being done at ITP.
Following the lecture, Dr. Smith drew up two chairs near the podium. He sat in one and invited members of the audience to come up and ask him questions about his talk or whatever was on their minds. In response to a question about how one finds his or her life purpose, Dr. Smith cried, “By hook or by crook!” Then he went on to give a thoughtful and instructive message about finding out what you’re good at by paying attention to what you enjoy. “Those are clues,” Dr. Smith said, “to where your passion lies.”
The audience’s long standing ovation clearly demonstrated he had captured their attention and their hearts.
