George Zimmer Receives Honorary Doctorate From ITP
On Saturday, June 7, 2003, George Zimmer, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of the Men's Wearhouse, received the coveted Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Humane Letters from the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology. The degree was presented by ITP Co-Presidents, Pat Luce and Bob Schmitt.
Mr. Zimmer received the honorary degree at a banquet attended by more than 300 people at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco. This was the first event of its kind in ITP's 28 year history. By way of this major undertaking, the Institute took a bold step in reaching out to the public for financial support. The event was supported and underwritten by donors from coast to coast.
Our special guest speaker was acclaimed actor-director, Leonard Nimoy, whose portrayal of Spock, on the popular television show Star Trek, has left an indelible imprint on popular culture. Mr. Nimoy spoke on "The Shekhina -A journey through scriptural mythology and ancient spirituality".
A highlight of the evening was presentation of an award to Ursula and Ernest Moore for decades of service to transpersonal values and the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology.
ITP Professor Charles Tart also spoke on the future of the human spirit. Other speakers included Pat Luce, Bob Schmitt, Ben Mancini, Charles Bresler, George Maciag, and Rinaldo Brutoco. The charming and able event Emcee was ITP Alumna, Dr. Marilyn Manning. Another ITP graduate, the Reverend Dr. Sean O'Laoire gave a stirring invocation and the Reverend Dr. Roger Goodwin, ITP Trustee, ended the evening with a beautiful prayer for peace, light and love. General Chair for the "Tribute to George Zimmer" was ITP past president, Ben Mancini.
