Contemporary Psychotherapy
Our psychotherapists practice a wide variety of therapeutic modalities, appropriately applied on a case by case basis. We offer in-depth therapy to bring about long-term growth, as well as brief therapy, which focuses on practical solutions to immediate problems. We match each client, according to his or her needs, with the most appropriate counselor.
Transpersonal Psychology
The Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (ITP) educates all students from a transpersonal perspective. Transpersonal psychology includes and goes beyond more traditional approaches to understanding the human psyche. It extends its reach to include the study of consciousness, spirituality, mind-body wellness, and the relationship of the individual to the community. The transpersonal approach emphasizes harmony, and the integration of body, mind and spirit, in order to maximize human potential, creativity, and fulfillment.

How often should I see my therapist?
The frequency and duration of therapy is determined by client and therapist together, and is based on the needs of the client as presented in the first session. This question may be revisited on an ongoing basis as needed throughout the therapy process.
Psychotherapy is generally once a week. On occasion, due to a crisis or a desire to intensify the therapy process, a client may request (or therapist may recommend) more frequent sessions. A general course of treatment runs about nine months or longer. Brief solution-focused treatment can often be conducted in six to twelve sessions. Long term in-depth work to resolve life long issues and patterns may often take over three years to complete. Each session with your therapist is usually fifty minutes in length, although certain experiential modalities may be scheduled for a longer session. Couples therapy and group therapy sessions vary according to a therapist's discernment of client needs.
How do I know that what I tell my therapist will be kept private?
All psychologists practice confidentiality in concurrence with the professional ethics code. This means that without a release of information (permission form) signed by the client, everything that happens within a session is held confidential between client and therapist.
There are a few legally mandated exceptions that require a therapist to break confidentiality:
- In the event of potential serious danger to the client or another
- In the event of suspected abuse to a child, elder, or other dependent adult
- In the event of a court subpoena presented by the legal representative of the client
- The only further limitation to this in the case of supervised interns is that information shared will be discussed in individual or group supervision with a licensed Clinical Psychologist. At that point, the rules of confidentiality hold.
What is creative expression and how is it used in therapy?
Creative expression in therapy refers to the use of movement, art, music and drama to help facilitate psychological process. The arts can tap into feelings and experiences which may be difficult to talk about or express verbally. For example, sadness may be expressed more easily through drawing than talking. If you have an interest in using the creative arts in your therapy, please express this desire when you call for an appointment.
