Many students come to ITP with substantial accomplishments already under their belts, such as an earned Master’s degree in a related field or a significant amount of graduate level course work in psychology. At ITP we recognize and value your accomplishments and hard work. Such applicants may be eligible to enter one of our Ph.D. programs with Advanced Standing, allowing them to jump-start their advanced educational dreams and work towards an earlier graduation date.
Here’s how it works:
1. Applicants may earn advanced standing into the part-time Global On-line Ph.D. or one of the full-time Residential doctoral programs if they have completed a Master’s degree (or equivalent coursework) in psychology, social work, divinity or a related field with a strong emphasis or specialization in psychology.
2. Also, students who have completed graduate course work that is appropriate to the degree they are seeking can transfer up to 45 units of course work into the clinical doctoral program, provided that the courses match up with our course requirements. Â These students may also enroll with advanced standing.
Global doctoral students enrolling with advanced standing will begin their program in Year 3 Residential doctoral students will enroll in Year 2, thus getting meaningful credit for their previous accomplishments and shortening their Ph.D. process significantly along the way.
The Global Ph.D. in Psychology provides opportunity for working adults to study transpersonal psychology in a distance learning and online format for personal, educational or professional advancement. The program is designed for mature students who have the ability to work independently and the desire and motivation to parlay the principles and practices of transpersonal psychology into creative and professional applications. ITP's Global Ph.D. in Psychology is a 120 unit program combining online classes, residential seminars, and innovative research.
ITP's Global Ph.D. in Psychology focuses on the research, evaluation, and application of transpersonal principles, (such as mindfulness, discernment, compassion, and appreciation of differences) in four major areas: individuals, small groups, organizations, and global community. Besides giving students the opportunity to integrate academic rigor with experiential learning, the program fosters collaborative learning through group dialogue and participation. In addition students will have the opportunity to apply these principles of transpersonal psychology to specific activities, such as research, counseling, education, wellness, administration, as well as religious, spiritual, and other helping professions.
The Residential Program offers two Doctoral degrees: the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and the Ph.D. in Transpersonal Psychology (with the possibility of specializations in Spiritual Guidance, Creative Expression, or Research and Education). These degree programs are dedicated to producing skillful, well-rounded psychologists through disciplined inquiry, scholarly research and self discovery in the context of a supportive community environment.
Each degree includes a basic core curriculum in Transpersonal Psychology following a balanced growth model of learning which maintains, as the ancient Greek system did, that education must be concerned with all aspects of the human experience. This whole person approach combines theory, research, professional practice and persona] integration in order to break through conventional, often fragmented notions of health. Essential to the curriculum is the personal relevance of the work. Collaborative learning is emphasized in order to understand, first-hand, the experiences of others and the validity of opposites.
Graduates of the Residential Ph.D. programs are well prepared to tread traditional psychological pathways with confidence, while contributing an innovative transpersonal approach to the field. Our alums are teaching in colleges and universities, practicing as psychotherapists and clinical psychologists, offering spiritual direction, coaching, and career counseling, maintaining careers in corporate and management areas, working with agencies and non-profits, and practicing in health professions.
